Stratus clouds built up in flat, gray layers, and are often accompained by drizzle. They are formed by the lifting of a morning fog, or when warm, moist winds meet cold air. As the warm air rides slowly up over the cold air, moisture steadily condenses from the air as it cools. This creates a vast blanket of cloud than can be hundreds of feet thick.
