The 1990 Atlantic hurricane season officially began June 1, 1990, and ended on November 30, 1990. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin.

The 1990 season was very active, producing 14 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 1 major hurricane. These totals, save for the one major hurricane, are well above the long-term average of 10/6/2, respectively. In spite of the immense levels of activity, few storms affected land, with no tropical cyclones of tropical storm intensity making landfall in the United States -- the last time this happened was during the 1890 season. Hurricane Diana caused significant damage across portions of Mexico. Hurricane Gustav became the season's one and only major hurricane, reaching Category 3 status in the open Atlantic Ocean well away from land. Gustav threatened the northern Leeward Islands for a time. Hurricane Klaus, although weak, produced significant flooding on the island of Martinique. Klaus's remnants merged with Tropical Storm Marco and a cold front and helped produced significant rainfall and associated flooding across the southeast United States. Hurricane Lili threatened the East Coast of the United States for a time, but ultimately turned away and out to sea without incident. Tropical Storm Marco made landfall along the west-central coast of Florida as a tropical depression.

Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) Rating

The list below shows the ACE for each storm in the season. The ACE is, broadly speaking, a measure of the power of the hurricane multiplied by the length of time it existed for, so hurricanes that lasted a long time, as well as particularly strong hurricanes, have higher ACEs.

  • Arthur - 2.31250
  • Bertha - 7.91750
  • Cesar - 3.40000
  • Diana - 4.26500

The World Meteorological Organization retired two names from the 1990 season during their Spring meeting in 1991: Diana and Klaus. They were replaced with Dolly and Kyle for the 1996 season, respectively.
